AN 8 DAY
FUSEE ENGLISH DIAL
WALL CLOCK
BY WILLIAM DARLING OF YORK
1830 - 1850
This is a very attractive mahogany eight-day fusee wall clock by William Darling of York. 12 inch convex dial, cast brass bezel in beautiful original condition. Circa 1830.
William Darling was a clock and watchmaker in York. He was son of William Darling of York and was apprenticed on 18 September 1820 to James Barber and William Whitwell (jewellers and co-partners) for seven years. From 1830 - 1858 he had premises at 42 Coney Street in the city of York (now occupied by British Home Stores).
This particular clock prior to 1993 hung in the former Yorkshire Club at Lendal Bridge in York. It was then put up for auction at Tennants Auctioneers on Saturday 30 October 1993 it has a letter of provenance dated 18 Nov 1993 from Mr Rodney Tennant of Tennants Auctioneers, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.
It is worthy of mention that a similar clock is presently in use in the York Reference Library across the road from the old Yorkshire Club, which was established at about the same time as the Yorkshire Club.
